Rama VIII Bridge in Bangkok

Many of the major bridges spanning the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok are named after Kings. In my opinion, one bridge stands out above all others due to it’s unique atmosphere, created by the abundance of free space and public life that surrounds it. That bridge is the Rama VIII Bridge, named after King Ananda Mahido.

The bridge itself is a cable-stayed bridge with a peculiar “A” shaped pylon as its only support; located about 1/3 the distance from the west end of the bridge. The cables are painted a gold/yellow color, as are a number of other metal components. It is a beautiful sight to lay eyes on, especially at dusk and into the night.

It is also a haven for young and old alike. As with many of the larger bridges, the space underneath (or nearby) has been set aside for the public. It’s not uncommon to find large groups of locals doing aerobics, jogging, playing football, skateboarding, biking, photography, and all other manner of activities here. As well, just south, and adjacent the bridge on the west bank, is a fairly good sized park. The combination of beautiful architecture combined with a park atmosphere makes this location all the more attractive to city goer’s needing a break and some exercise.

Note – The park and main public hangout are on the west side of the bridge. Their is however a small area under the eastern flank, which harbors a dead end street and small area where you’ll usually find people fishing or just handing out playing “miniaturized” versions of football and other games. This area is sandwiched between a large factory like building and one of the king’s palace’s (off limits to the public).

Chao Phraya River Thailand

Chao-Phraya-River
The Chao Phraya is a major river in Thailand, with its low alluvial river plain marking the mainland of the country. It begins at the confluence of the Ping and Nan river at Nakhon Sawan (also called Pak Nam Pho) in the Nakhon Sawan province.

The Nan and its biggest confluent, the Yom River, flow nearly parallel from Phitsanulok till Chumsaeng in the north of Nakhon Sawan province. The biggest confluent of the Ping is the Wang River which enters near Sam Ngao district in Tak province.

The Chao Phraya system drains an area of approximately 160,000 km², of which the largest contribution is the Ping with 35,000 km². The Chao Phraya runs from north to south for 372 km from the central plains to Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand. However in Chainat the river splits into the main river course and the Tha Chin river, which then flows parallel to the main river and exits to Gulf of Thailand the about 35 km west of Bangkok in Samut Sakhon.

In the low alluvial plain which begins below the Chainat dam many small canals (khlong) split off from the main river, used for the irrigation of the rice paddies. The cities along the river are Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Singburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Samut Prakan relatively. On old maps the river is named as Menam or Mae Nam, the Thai word for river. The name Chao Phraya is also a Thai feudal title, which can be translated as General. In the English-language media in Thailand the name is often translated as 'river of kings'.

Enchanting Temple of The Dawn, Wat Arun

Wat Arun at 10 Baht coin
Wat Arun Ratchawararam (Temple of the Dawn) is located in the riverside of Chao Phraya River, at the Western Bank of Bangkok (Thon Buri). The name of Arun itself, may have two meanings, as “Arun” at Thai language, means “Dawn”. However, there another version of the origin of this name, as it was thought that the name was adapted from “Aruna”, Indian God of Dawn.

This is definitely one of the must visit temple in Thailand, landmark of the temple itself has becoming the main icon of Bangkok, and even you can find the picture of this temple at head of 10 baht coin.

Wat Arun opens everyday from 8.30 until 17.30, and the admission of this temple is 50 Baht for visitors. The main feature of this temple is the Khmer-style tower which are encrusted with colourful porcelain. People can climb the steep steps to the top of the tower, and grab an enchanting view of Bangkok riverside from here. This is definitely worth a try, unless you’re afraid of climbing the high-steep steps.

Visiting Wat Arun is one of the most destination preferred by tourists, so that there are a lot of day tour package offered by many tour and travel agents. Usually, the tour of Wat Arun is combined with Grand Palace, Chao Phraya River Cruise, and also Wat Pho, to make a one memorable day of Bangkok trip.

Despite the name of Wat Arun means “Temple of the Dawn”, the most stunning view of Wat Arun can be seen while sunset, as you’ll see the enchanting light from the temple tower, which combined with the dark blue color of the sky as the background. Definitely worth a visit! Wat Arun figures in one of Thailand's most colorful festival, the Royal Tod Kathin, in which the King travels down in a procession of Royal barges to present new robes to the monks after their three-month lent period.

Grand Palace IN Bangkok, Thailand.

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are two very popular Bangkok tourist attractions. Wat Phra Kaew is also known as the Emerald Buddha. This is one of the most respected Buddhist temples in the world. It is located very close to a Grand Palace.

The Emerald Buddha was created 500 years after the real Buddha experienced Nirvana. The history of the Emerald Buda Temple is very interesting, and the structure is even more impressive when seen firsthand.

The Grand Palace is where the 18th century kings of Thailand used to live. King Rama I started the construction of the palace in 1782. Ever since, many additions have been constructed. As a result it has significantly increased its size. Bangkok is a beautiful tourist location with many ancient Buddhist temples.

Be ready to be bowled over by its golden splendor. The King’s Grand Palace in Bangkok is one of the world’s richest royal complexes.
