Nishin Goten

The Nishin Goten, also known as the Herring Mansion is also another famous Otaru Tourist Attractions that you should pay a visit whenever you are in Otaru. Fishing industry is the main source of living in Otaru, and in the olden times, fishery owners would compete in having the most extravagant homes in the city. These mansions also serve as a place for fish processing, and among these mansions is the Nishin Goten, also referred as the Herring Mansion, for this is where herring (a kind of fish) is often being processed. It took seven years to build the mansion and despite of its age, it still is one of the most attractive buildings in Otaru.
